Puglia continues to grow, both in terms of quality and awareness of this growth and the ways to achieve it. Just consider that the wines awarded with Tre Bicchieri at the designation of origin are 19, compared to only five years ago (10), to understand how the identity and typicality of the territory are now increasingly important factors for the people of Puglia. Just a few years ago, regional production was fundamentally linked to the grape variety rather than the territory. All this without considering some particular cases, such as Gianfranco Fino's Es, which has not been under the designation of origin for some years but certainly cannot be reduced to a "simple" Primitivo, as it shouts Manduria with every sip. The Tre Bicchieri are also 26 this year, and they seem to fully represent the high-quality panorama of the region. The standouts are the Primitivo from Gioia del Colle and Manduria (7 awarded wines each), but we also find Salice Salentino, Brindisi, Castel del Monte, and for the first time, Terra d'Otranto comes into the spotlight.
Tre Bicchieri 2024 - The Best Susumaniello Wines
Here, we focus on the two Susumaniello wines that received the Tre Bicchieri in the Gambero Rosso Vini d'Italia 2024 Guide. One is the Askos Susumaniello 2022 from Masseria Li Veli, highlighting hints of black pepper and wild berries, followed by a fresh, juicy, smooth palate, all very drinkable. The vineyards of the Falvo family are divided between those located all around the cellar, on the outskirts of Cellino San Marco, with red and sandy soils, mainly dedicated to red grapes, and those located in the Valle d'Itria, where white varieties take center stage.
The other is the Brindisi Rosso Susumaniello Oltremé 2021 from Tenute Rubino, which, with aromas of black olive tapenade, pepper, and berries, leads to a palate rich in fruit, savory, juicy, with a beautiful grit and structure. The vineyards owned by Tenute Rubino stretch from the Adriatic ridge to the Brindisi hinterland, from vineyards overlooking the Adriatic Sea to those located in the Primitivo di Manduria designation a few kilometers from the Ionian Sea.
