VINEYARD | One and a half hectares of centenary vineyard located at 400 metres above sea level on the hills behind Cupra Marittima, with a background painted by the blue line of the Adriatic Sea. The roots sink into soils with a strong calcareous component with a good presence of sand and skeleton: a dry and well-draining base. Marco Casolanetti discovered it by chance at the beginning of the new century, noting the ampelographic diversity compared to Montepulciano. Intrigued, he conducted research among the elderly in the area: the vineyard was planted with a variety that the farmers confidentially called "bordò." More in-depth examinations have made it clear that is without a shadow of doubt a biotype of Grenache well acclimatised in the Piceno area.
PERSONS | Marco Casolanetti and Eleonora Rossi started in 1996 with an old vineyard in Montepulciano and have, among new ideas and experiments, created an inimitable and unmistakable style. Many small companies have relied on Marco's advice and ideas: seeds that have created a luxuriant forest of small artisans who today move safely, often reaching the top of the regional production sector. At Oasi degli Angeli everything is organised methodically: practices inspired by biodynamics are implemented in the vineyard, and the underground cellar is fully equipped to prepare a production that counts less than 10,000 bottles each harvest.
WINE | The grapes are vinified in concrete egg and then drawn off after about 20 days, followed by racking into first passage barriques. After a year, the wine is moved to further new barriques where it is elevated for another 18 months before bottling. Kupra 2019 has a diaphanous coat with garnet shades; the nose is a whirlwind of sensations that range from blueberries to dried orange peel embracing tones of toasted hazelnut, garrigue, subtle smokey and brackish nuances. In the mouth it has a peremptory dynamic, with a strong alcoholic power well blended with tannic texture of the highest quality. In the finish, all the energy explodes, giving rise to a refined close with an insistent aromatic hold.
