VINEYARD | Located at the northern end of the denomination, near the Tanaro river, Monvigliero is recognised as "the" grand cru of Verduno. A hill of silt and clay stratifications with a low percentage of sand, the Marne di Sant'Agata Fossili, where the vines grow between 250 and 300 metres above sea level. Of the 22 hectares that surround the vineyard area of this cru, "only" 6,000 square metres belong to the company. With the '18, Vietti takes the stage of this territory with a strong identity and vocation for the production of elegant and progressive Barolos.
PERSONS | Vietti is a name that merges with the history of Piemonte wine. The winery, created by Carlo Vietti at the end of the 19th century, has seen several generations passing on the baton. Luca Currado Vietti and his wife Elena represent the last of these. Until the beginning of 2023 they carried on the company vision and the tradition of Nebbiolo cultivation with passion. Starting from the first months of this year, the two confidently left the company in the hands of the Krause family.
WINE | The 2018 vintage marks the first harvest for Vietti with the great Monvigliero cru. But this is not the only news. The company opted not to de-stem 60% of the grapes and it is possible, if the vintages allow it, to arrive at 100% whole bunch harvesting. In the glass the result is even more surprising than when we tasted it for the first time in the spring of 2022: the fruity is well expressed, between youthful notes that emerge between raspberries and blueberries to which is added a complex note that seems to never end: sweet spices, orange peel, a touch of undergrowth and then cinchona, noble resins and laurel. The mouth is flowing, rhythmic, very fine in its mix of soft (the tannin is incredibly silky) and sapid sensations, with the balanced acidity that makes the sip deep but above all fresh and elegant. In short, a great Barolo, very good now, but which will surprise year after year.
