Four bakeries, each with a very specific philosophy. There's the historic local one, the one specialising in traditional pastries, and the more modern ones where you can also stop for a snack or a proper meal

Here are the best bread bakeries in Lucca highlighted by our latest guide Pane e Panettieri d'Italia, which features over thirty bakeries in Tuscany.

The best bread bakeries in Lucca

Il Fornaccio Pancaffè

Il Fornaccio is synonymous with bread but also with variety. Classic breads parade through its offerings, such as the home-style loaf, even in its semi-wholemeal version, or the plain white and multigrain prepared with sourdough. Then come the 'daily' breads, varying depending on the day of the week: walnut bread on Mondays or rye bread on Thursdays. Besides being a traditional bakery, Il Fornaccio caters perfectly to any time of the day. For breakfast, a rich counter of sweet treats awaits: from brownies to slices of tart, passing through pastries and croissants. For a snack, crispy mini pizzas, flatbreads, and stuffed focaccias are available. During lunch break, one can enjoy a slice of pizza or one of the daily specials (the meatballs are excellent).

Forno Ghilardi

The filled products on the counter practically vary every day, depending on the available ingredients: when the focaccia with basil pesto and walnuts is available, the one with cooked ham and burrata isn't found with caramelised onion cream and Parma ham. The bread made with sourdough and grains cultivated and ground in Italy is a staple. Worth trying is the potato bread, made with farro and rye flour and local potatoes, which keeps well, or the multigrain, stemming from a consistently different blend of grains. The sweet offerings are equally delightful and diverse, ranging from croissants for breakfast to a wide variety of cakes and small cakes, including the “co' becchi” ones, like the “d'erbi,” in Lucchese tradition. Alongside the classic holiday productions, they have added the “bauletti.”

Gigliola

Gigliola, sister of the Il Giglio restaurant in Lucca (the same team recently opened a pizzeria too: Bonny Pizza), is a fun place to come for good food, interesting drinks, and above all, a good time. Everything here is original: the style, the music selection, the events that often liven up the place, and especially the menu inspired by cuisines from around the world. In such an atmosphere, the bakery's offering (with an open lab) couldn't be any less impressive. The bread maestro is Pino, the ten-year-old sourdough starter. Thanks to Pino, you can find the multigrain loaf every day, which you can either enjoy in-house or take away. This isn't the only delicacy produced: depending on the day, you can taste the focaccia with za'atar, pita or stuffed grilled sandwiches, baguettes, various types of pizza by the slice, and the ever-present focaccina with cheese and peas, a hallmark of the establishment. Don't miss out on the grand leavened products for the holidays.

Forno a Vapore Amedeo Giusti

Open since 1830, the Amedeo Giusti Steam Bakery offers customers its creations, whether savoury or sweet. The wide display window on the alley is an invitation for passersby, and once inside, one cannot help but be captivated by the variety of products in terms of types and sizes that this shop offers. The experience and tradition of baking give life to irresistible products for taste, lightness, and goodness. Among the breads, it's worth trying the one dedicated to “Nonna Fedora,” made with natural leavening, or “Maurizio,” which has obtained the certification of Tuscan Dop bread. There are plenty of creatively enriched focaccias, rustic breads in various shapes; a selection of sliced cold cuts allows you to fill your sandwiches according to your preferences. Don't miss the sweet focaccia with sugar and raisins.
