The magical moment for Piedmont wine continues. One realises that things are going well when the market forgives any mistakes, perhaps due more to some clumsy choices than to wrong production directions. The Piemonte winew continue to grind ahead even if at times they do so to the detriment of the utmost integrity of the machine; the important thing is to keep going and never stop.

Tre Bicchieri 2024. The best Grignolino wines

Here we focus on one of the region's indigenous grape varieties, Grignolino, and the two labels that we awarded the Tre Bicchieri in the Gambero Rosso Guida Vini d'Italia 2024 guide. One is Monferace, Grignolino aged according to ancient canons that call for 30 months in oak barrels and the same number in the bottle, which is an excellent wine. It is produced by Guido Alleva, of Tenuta Santa Caterina, a vigneron every day increasingly dedicated to his spectacular wine cellar, together with Luciana Biondo, a very capable technical assistant both in the vineyard and in production. This noble grape variety is at the heart of the quality production of one of Piemonte's most beautiful historic estates, where sustainability and in particular the enhancement of soil fertility and the safeguarding of biodiversity are key assets.

The other is a Grignolino from the Accornero family, which since 1897 has been a privileged interpreter of the Monferrato winemaking history, growing Grignolino and Barbera, Malvasia di Casorzo and Freisa. The Bricco del Bosco Vecchie Vigne is truly on the up, with varietal characteristics in evidence and great personality. The morphology of the land is for the most part hilly, with calcareous marly soils that transfer colour, depth and intensity to wines that are also capable of showing beautiful longevity. The winery is equipped with modern technology, but production remains traditional.
