There’s a rush to uncover where Elon Musk might be interested in purchasing a castle or house in Tuscany, following a provocative article in the Times. Among the potential locations is Bibbiano, a locality in the municipality of Buonconvento, home to two medieval castles. However, at present, there seems to be no concrete negotiations, with local authorities denying any ongoing talks.
The Tenuta di Bibbiano case
What is certain is that Castello di Bibbiano has nothing to do with Tenuta di Bibbiano, owned by Tommaso Marrocchesi Lenzi in the Chianti Classico region. The owner felt compelled to clear up any confusion to avoid misleading anyone.
“It is important to emphasise that Tenuta di Bibbiano is located in the namesake locality of Castellina in Chianti, in the Chianti Classico area, and therefore has no connection with any potential interest Mr Musk might have in a castle in the Bibbiano locality of the Buonconvento municipality in the province of Siena,” stated Tommaso Marrocchesi Marzi, who in recent hours has received numerous requests for clarification from those misled by the name's similarity.
“Our estate, which spans 220 hectares of family-owned land, including 40 hectares dedicated to premium vineyards, remains firmly in the hands of our family, which continues to focus with renewed commitment on developing and enhancing this historic heritage,” Marrocchesi concluded.
Frequent visits to Montalcino, a regular at Castiglion del Bosco
What is certain is that the owner of X (formerly Twitter), Tesla, and Starlink has been a frequent visitor to Tuscany in recent years, particularly to the Montalcino area, where he stays—secretly but not unnoticed—at Castiglion del Bosco. This luxury resort, part of the Rosewood group, was founded by Massimo Ferragamo and his wife Chiara before being sold in 2022 to a prominent international family office.
Musk appears to be a regular at Castiglion del Bosco, and his great passion for the area seems to have sparked a desire to acquire a Tuscan retreat of his own. The billionaire is an admirer of the local wine, cuisine, lifestyle, and outdoor sports. It wouldn’t be surprising if he decided to start producing wine in a region that is internationally renowned. After all, he’s a great entrepreneur.
Castello di Montepò Biondi Santi in the spotlight
Rumours also suggest that Castello di Montepò, located in the municipality of Scansano, is among Musk’s potential targets. The property has been owned by Jacopo Biondi Santi since the early 2000s, following the sale of the historic Il Greppo winery in Montalcino. Castello di Montepò spans approximately 600 hectares, with around 50 hectares dedicated to vineyards, producing, among other things, a more Maremma-style Sangiovese.
For now, all parties deny or feign ignorance of any negotiations. However, Musk’s presence in the area is not exactly rare, so it’s simply a matter of waiting to see what happens.
