Alta Langa DOCG is officially the "Wine of the Year Regione Piemonte" for 2025. The preview, organised by the Protection Consortium on Monday, 10 March, was an opportunity to kick off the celebrations for this traditional method sparkling wine from the northwest, which counts 85 associated wineries (+14 in 2024), with 455 hectares of vineyards, a production of approximately 3.2 million bottles, and sales growing by around 10% compared to 2023. The debut took place at the Centrale della Nuvola Lavazza in Turin, with a tasting of over two hundred cuvées of traditional method sparkling wine.
Towards the new "Piemonte Brand"
As the Wine of the Year (which producers will be able to indicate on the label thanks to a dedicated sticker designed by the Consortium), Alta Langa will be the ambassador of excellent products throughout 2025: from fruit and vegetables to rice, from meats to cheeses. "To promote them in an innovative way," announced the Regional Councillor for Agriculture, Paolo Bongioanni, "we have created the new 'Piemonte Brand,' which will accompany our excellences around the world, associate them with our territory, and will be supported, for the first time, by a massive media campaign on the excellence of our food." Alta Langa will be the official wine for the presentation of this new brand, scheduled for Monday, 24 March (at 3 PM) in Rome, with the Minister of Agriculture, Francesco Lollobrigida, and the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Christophe Hansen, at Piazza Repubblica in the Piemonte stand, during Agricoltura è, an event organised by Masaf to mark the anniversary of the Treaties of Rome.
The denomination extended also to wine labels
The Region has also announced that another new initiative for wine producers is "in the final stages." Specifically, this refers to the possibility—discussed at the recent Grandi Langhe event—of voluntarily adding the extended geographical indication "Piemonte" to labels. According to the regional department, this is a territorial promotion strategy that could potentially involve the 250 million bottles of Piedmontese wine distributed worldwide. "Alta Langa DOCG was not just a new wine: it was a vision, a project, and, above all, a successful bet that makes all of us in Piemonte proud," emphasised the president of the Alta Langa Consortium, Mariacristina Castelletta, recalling that Alta Langa DOCG is "the oldest traditional method sparkling wine in Italy, born in Piemonte in the mid-19th century."
A new bill on wine tourism coming soon
The event held in Turin also provided the opportunity for the Piemonte Region to introduce another new initiative related to the wine economy. The Regional Councillor for Tourism and Culture, Marina Chiarelli, announced that a bill on wine tourism will be presented "soon in the Regional Council": "Piedmontese wineries," she stated, "have now become a must-have in the tourist experience and must integrate more and more with the rest of our region’s offerings."
