Carla Bruni launches her non-alcoholic wine: "Dry January? If it were up to me, I’d make February and March sober too"

The former First Lady of France introduces Excessive, her non-alcoholic sparkling wine available in both white and rosé versions, in Paris. A tribute to limitless conviviality and a personal message against addiction

"Unfortunately, alcohol is for people with moderation." With these words, Carla Bruni, guest of Francesca Fagnani on Belve at the start of 2024, described her struggle with addiction—a battle that led her to change her lifestyle and, consequently, her production focus. This was the inspiration behind the idea of a non-alcoholic wine, launched at the start of January—appropriately during Dry January—and produced from her estate in Provence, purchased five years ago with former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. "Its taste will be delicious, fruity, and infinite, because you can drink it until the end of the evening," the former model and singer-songwriter told the French magazine Gala.

Carla Bruni’s non-alcoholic sparkling wine

Already known for the success of her rosé wine Roseblood (a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, and Rolle), produced at her Provençal estate Château d’Estoublon, Carla Bruni has recently launched Excessive Blanc (made from 100% Moscato Bianco) and Excessive Rosé (a blend of Moscato Bianco and Merlot). These sparkling wines, entirely alcohol-free, are priced at €29 each. The name is no coincidence: referencing her 2002 song L’Excessive, it carries an ironic and introspective message. "She’s a girl who has no concept of moderation," Bruni said, referring to herself. Produced at the same estate, the wine aims to be an ode to limitless celebration. As described on the official website, it is "a non-alcoholic sparkling wine that combines the pleasure of the finest bubbles with a new vision of conviviality."

Behind the project is Jean-Guillaume Prats, formerly director of renowned names such as Château Lafite Rothschild.

Last year, during her appearance on Francesca Fagnani’s Belve, the former model shared: "Some people can drink one glass of wine and stop there. But I feel a little devil in my brain that pushes me to drink a third, a fourth. Now I’ve almost stopped drinking because my tendency toward addiction is too strong." Less than a year later, she has launched her first non-alcoholic wine during the month dedicated to the 31-day sobriety challenge. In a recent interview with Gala, Carla Bruni said: "I think it’s a great initiative. I’ll do Dry January, and I’ll also do Dry February and maybe even Dry March," she added with a laugh.

Château d’Estoublon, the Bruni-Sarkozy Estate in Provence

The Estate in Provence

In Provence—a wine region best known for its rosé wines — among rows of vines, lavender fields, and a majestic 18th-century château, lies Château d’Estoublon. Carla Bruni and her husband Nicolas Sarkozy purchased the estate in 2020. The former model and singer describes it as her personal version of the Garden of Eden. "We fell in love with the property at first sight," she told Vogue in an interview a few years ago. "It’s this countryside full of roses, a paradise in summer, with a magical energy that fills every corner."

The estate spans 17 hectares of vineyards featuring 10 different grape varieties, alongside 120 hectares of olive trees, all cultivated using organic methods.
