Tuscany this year is the most awarded region in the guide, with a remarkable 89 Tre Bicchieri. Due to the vastness of its territory and denominations, the variety of styles and terroirs, these results are thoroughly justified. There is a dynamism, a desire to grow and deepen the bond with the territory that knows no bounds.
Tre Bicchieri 2024. The best Cortona Syrah
Here, we focus on Cortona, which - like Bolgheri - is an ideal land for international varieties. Indeed, it is steadily placed on the map of Italian Syrah enthusiasts and beyond. Two labels have been awarded the Tre Bicchieri on the Vini d'Italia 2024 guide by Gambero Rosso. One is the '19 Apice, which has a nose with hints of saltiness and iodine, notes of leather and tobacco, and mature cherry. It presents a pleasant tension in the mouth, with lively and crisp tannins and a savoury, prolonged finish. This is produced by Stefano Amerighi, who, in his estate on the hills of Cortona, primarily focuses on Syrah. Work on soil and plant protection follow natural rhythms and methods, dictated by lunar and planet phases. Vinification also takes place without the use of chemical corrections.
The other is the '20 Cortona Syrah Il Castagno, with a clear colour and a beautiful aromatic complexity on the nose, featuring hints of pepper and aromatic herbs, fruit notes, predominantly currants and raspberries. On the palate, it boasts vigour, beautiful harmony, with fine tannins and a relaxed finish. This is produced by Fabrizio Dionisio, who - assisted in managing the estate by his wife Alessandra - uprooted the old Sangiovese and Trebbiano vineyards, then replanted new ones, focusing particularly on Syrah, while also carving out a small space for Viognier.
