Trekking and ski mountaineering enthusiasts know it well: the village of Montespluga, near Madesimo, is a magical place for those who love to venture into unspoiled nature and admire the spectacle of the Alps. But before crossing the Spluga Pass, a historic route that connects Italy and Switzerland, there's a must-stop. It's called Albergo della Posta, but it's not just a hotel. It’s also a restaurant, and above all, it’s Italy’s highest wine cellar, with a history that has been intertwined from the start with what was, for a long time, the shortest route from Milan to the Rhine Valley.
The origins of Albergo della Posta
A place of shelter and hospitality for those on long journeys. Today, where once carts and horses rested, there are now mountain bikes belonging to sports enthusiasts or vehicles of tourists who come here for a well-deserved break.
It all began in 1822 when Archduke Rainer of Austria, Viceroy of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, inaugurated the road in Montespluga commissioned by Emperor Francis I. An inn was essential in a transit location like this, and indeed it was established right next to the customs office and the post office. The innkeeper, a man from Teggiate, ensured it was well-managed, warming guests with local dishes and excellent Valtellina red wine. Some things may have changed over time, but some things remain the same.
A family story
For three generations, the Sala family has kept the ancient spirit of this place alive: starting with Maurilio, who purchased Albergo della Posta in 1955 and developed the hotel and restaurant, then his son Fausto, who realized his passion for wine by introducing the wine cellar, and finally to his grandson Cristian, a chef and the current manager of the establishment.
Renovations to the structure have not altered its welcoming atmosphere, and many historic corners have retained their original appearance, allowing visitors to feel the rich history of a place that has marked the story of Montespluga.
High-altitude wine cellar (and more)
After taking in the breathtaking beauty, forever imprinting the colors of the lakes, mountains, and forests surrounding the village in your memory and heart, it’s time to satisfy your sense of taste. Italy’s highest wine cellar (and one of the highest in all of Europe) offers a selection of over 500 labels, ranging from the much-loved wines of Valtellina to the rarest and most sought-after bottles from Italy, France, and the rest of Europe.
The restaurant delights visitors with all the dishes you would expect to find upon reaching the high Spluga Valley: pizzoccheri, gnocchi, game, stews, polenta, and local cold cuts and cheeses. Finally, those who wish to take a piece of this journey with them can purchase local specialties in the small grocery shop.
A discovery for Italians on a trip, but also a wonderful introduction for those stepping into the area from Switzerland for the first time.
