Historic, artisanal, and family-run wineries. Here are the 52 awarded the Tre Bicchieri for the first time

Oct 16 2024, 13:23
Out of the 498 wines awarded the Tre Bicchieri in the 2025 Vini d'Italia guide by Gambero Rosso, 52 come from wineries receiving this top recognition for the first time. Here is a region-by-region breakdown of the winners

This year sets a record for new entries among the Tre Bicchieri winners, who have been showcased at the grand tasting in Rome (October 13, Palazzo delle Esposizioni). The 2025 edition of Gambero Rosso’s Vini d’Italia guide awards the highest recognition to 52 wineries for the first time, marking a sharp increase compared to previous editions of the publication, which is translated into English, German, Chinese, and Japanese. Among these are historic wineries that have shifted gears, including some cooperatives and family-run estates where generational change has had a significant impact on production and the quality in the glass. Alongside these are artisanal wineries, still relatively unknown to the wider public, earning the Tre Bicchieri thanks to their remarkable interpretation of native varieties, handled with notable expertise and sensitivity.

Tre Bicchieri 2025. New winners from North to South

Tuscany leads with the most new entries, with seven wineries earning Tre Bicchieri for the first time, followed closely by Piedmont, Marche, and Friuli Venezia Giulia, each with six debut awards. Trentino-Alto Adige also stands out with five noteworthy new additions, featuring both Trentodoc and still wines. From north to south, there are many exciting wineries to discover among the top ranks. Notably, Tenimenti Grieco in Molise secured its first Tre Bicchieri with an excellent interpretation of Tintilia, a red wine increasingly crafted with a contemporary flair, showcasing the high-altitude vineyards.

Most of the white wines awarded Tre Bicchieri for the first time are produced in stainless steel, or more rarely, in concrete tanks, like the Lugana from the Marangona winery. Few use large barrels, and even fewer use barriques. This marks a true shift in approach compared to just ten years ago when it was commonly believed that producing a great Italian white required the use of the famous 225-liter barrels.

As for rosé wines, two distinct styles are becoming increasingly well-defined in Italy. Valtènesi offers light, pale-colored rosés with subtle but rich flavors, thanks to Groppello grapes and a unique microclimate. Meanwhile, Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo continues to impress, blending the body and structure of Montepulciano with a vibrant freshness, resulting in exceptionally enjoyable versions. Among the red wines, grape varieties like Ciliegiolo, Schiopettino, Schiava, and Grignolino are taking the spotlight.
