Ligurian viticulture consists of many small vineyard plots, like the pieces of a mosaic, often challenging to cultivate due to the geomorphological conditions. During this year's tastings, we discovered an excellent Vermentino from the Ponente region at a very friendly price

You can't help but be captivated by the dedication Ligurian winemakers show in overcoming the difficulties of their territory. This narrow strip of land stretches for about 350 kilometres, streaked with steep slopes and dotted with Apennine peaks that seem to rise directly from the sea. In such a landscape, the vine must make do with small patches of land where traditional varieties are cultivated. The winemakers, who have developed their typically small-scale wineries over time, are forced to work almost exclusively by hand—true artisans of wine.

Among the producers that enrich Liguria's viticultural landscape is Durin, located in Ortovero, Savona province. The winery takes its name from grandfather Isidoro, nicknamed Doro, which in local dialect becomes Durìn. The business reached its current size thanks to Antonio Basso, supported by his wife, Laura. Antonio replaced the traditional mixed farming of the Arroscia Valley, purchasing new vineyards and restoring outdated ones. The winery's production focuses on various grape varieties such as Pigato, Vermentino, Rossese, Alicante, Granaccia, Ormeasco, Sangiovese, and Barbera, forming the basis of Durin's extensive range of labels. The wines are notable for their aromatic richness and fruit-forward profiles, with excellent typicity and recognisability.

Riviera Ligure di Ponente Vermentino 2023

The best value-for-money wine in Liguria according to the Berebene 2025 Guide

Vermentino is a grape variety found across the Ligurian arc, from the Colli di Luni to the Ponente, making it one of the region’s flagship wines. Antonio Basso offers two versions, and for the Berebene 2025 guide by Gambero Rosso, we chose the “base” version. The 2023 vintage is particularly compelling, blending a delightful citrusy zest with more complex notes reminiscent of Mediterranean aromatic herbs. Fruity fragrances pave the way for a rich, flavourful sip with a very pleasant aftertaste.
