If necessary, there will be consequences regarding Donald Trump's tariffs. Giorgia Meloni, in the courtyard of Palazzo Chigi, addresses the topic of the day without waiting for journalists to ask her. She does so from the stage where today eight Masters of Italian cuisine have been awarded, including pastry chef Iginio Massari, chef Massimo Bottura, and pizza chef Franco Pepe. "To avoid a trade war with tariffs, it cannot be ruled out that, if necessary, we may also have to consider appropriate responses to defend our productions," the Prime Minister said.
Meloni responds on tariffs
Italian agri-food products "are in demand all over the world, starting, of course, with Europe. It must be remembered that the United States," Meloni added, "is our second-largest export market, with exports rising by 17% in 2024. The US market is essential for us, and it is clear that the introduction of new tariffs would have a heavy impact on Italian producers. I also believe it would be unfair to many Americans, as it would limit access to our excellent products only to those who can afford to pay more."
The Minister of Agriculture, Francesco Lollobrigida, also addressed the issue as he left Palazzo Chigi. "We will see what happens. Italy has a strong system, and we are both aware and proud of our entrepreneurial framework, which has overcome difficult phases. Naturally, we hope that we will not face unsustainable situations, but the Italian government will do everything possible to support the sector in case of any difficulties."
Lollobrigida: "Risks for wine? Italy sets export record"
One of the sectors at risk from increased import duties in the United States is wine. "This year, we have reached a record for wine exports, so we have a value to protect. Italy is thriving in this sector, and we believe that some types of production face little risk, as they are impossible to replicate abroad. However, if the tariffs were confirmed as announced, there would undoubtedly be a general problem. We hope this will not happen," the minister concluded.
