The Le Cimate winery, located in the municipality of Gualdo Cattaneo in the province of Perugia, is a relatively young enterprise in the Umbrian wine landscape. Though Umbria is not among Italy's largest regions in terms of wine production, it boasts a well-established winemaking tradition.
The winery, founded in 2011 by Paolo Bartoloni, has successfully woven together the threads of a long family agricultural tradition that began in the 19th century. It has established itself in this context with a wine offering that reflects both respect for local traditions and openness to modern cultivation and winemaking practices. The name derives from the location of the estate, perched atop a hill offering views of the Martani Mountains and the town of Montefalco. This geographically privileged position, with optimal sun exposure and mineral-rich soils, plays a decisive role in the quality of the grapes produced. The vineyards are planted on clayey soils with a high percentage of limestone.
Standing out among the rows of vines are primarily traditional varieties: Sangiovese, Grechetto, and Trebbiano Spoletino. However, there is also room for a few international varieties. Year after year, the wines are gaining greater definition, with consistent acclaim across the range, starting with the Trebbiano Spoletino—a wine that the winery has always prioritised.
Spoleto Trebbiano Spoletino 2023 - Le Cimate
The best Value-for-Money wine in Umbria according to the Berebene 2025 Guide
The agronomic and winemaking expertise of Le Cimate has grown steadily, carried forward with a traditional spirit and a deep attachment to the land of origin. This has gone hand in hand with the increasing quality of the labels offered in their range.
We were particularly impressed by the Spoleto Trebbiano Spoletino '23, which features striking floral notes, such as acacia, alongside hints of aromatic herbs and spices like turmeric. On the palate, it is profound, fresh, and mineral, with solid structure and long persistence.
In the Berebene 2025 guide by Gambero Rosso, it was awarded as the best value-for-money wine of Umbria. Additionally, it earned the Due Bicchieri Rossi (Two Red Glasses) in the Vini d’Italia 2025 guide by Gambero Rosso, having reached the finals.
