No to moving the vineyards north, yes to forests in the south. In the debate on the relocation of Barolo to the northern slopes due to climate change, the Fontanafredda company of the Farinetti family intervenes with what it calls the "Bosco-Vigna manifesto, dedicated to all the vignerons of Langa".
An invitation to change the way of production
The reasoning starts from a consideration: "The climate has changed, but we cannot affirm that the north today is the new south. To do this - explains the company - a scientific experimentation is needed, which rightly would make sense to do. The debate opened by the Consortium is legitimate, which has operated well in recent years and has recently put important changes to the specification on the table, entrusting the decision to the majority of producers, but climate change is not countered by chasing it or adapting to continue producing as before. It is countered by anticipating it and changing the way of production".
The manifesto project
In particular, the invitation for all producers is to contribute to the biodiversity of the Langhe. "In the north, the last forests or other cultivations different from the vine remain, while on the other slopes monoculture is now dominant at the expense of the biodiversity of the Langhe. For this - it is Fontanafredda's point of view - in the absence of scientific bases, not only are we hesitant about opening nebbiolo from Barolo installations on hillside slopes facing north".
Then the announcement: "In the coming days, among the vineyards of Fontanafredda, we will plant over 150 specimens of plants, both forestry and fruit, both native and introduced, suitable for our territory. An ancient tradition of our countryside that, over the years, has been sacrificed for intensive monoculture. The aim is to promote the biodiversity of our hills, restoring flora and fauna".
