The many foreign tourists who flock to the city of Florence year-round usually do not settle for just visiting the city's iconic landmarks. It is not uncommon to notice fleets of small vans taking them out of the urban centre; suddenly, the scenery changes, and the white marble of churches and monuments is replaced by hills dotted with olive groves and vineyards. These are the Florentine Hills, the area where the Chianti awarded as Red Wine of the Year in the Gambero Rosso Vini d’Italia 2025 guide is produced.
But that’s not all: in the Berebene 2025 guide, when we compared the scores with the prices of the wines tasted, we realised that the Regional Prize for Tuscany would also go to a Chianti from the Colli Fiorentini, the Sorrettole from La Querce.
The La Querce Estate and Chianti Colli Fiorentini
La Querce, owned by the Marchi family since 1962, takes its name from the great oak tree that stood in front of the villa, felled by the Germans during World War II. The estate extends over the hill overlooking Impruneta, in the heart of the Chianti Colli Fiorentini production area.
Marco Ferretti, who has managed the estate on behalf of the family since 1985, has worked extensively in recent years to enhance the quality of the products. A significant milestone in this process was the replanting of nearly all the vineyards, using traditional varieties like Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Colorino, as well as Merlot.
The estate has two cellars: one for winemaking, equipped with fermentation tanks and steel vats, with part of the facility located underground for bottle ageing; the other is located beneath the villa, housing the barriques, a historic cellar, and a tasting room.
Chianti Colli Fiorentini Sorrettole '22 - La Querce
The wine with the best value for money in Tuscany according to the Berebene 2025 Guide
The wines produced by La Querce have a sober character and are well-crafted, primarily drawing on classic Tuscan varieties, and they mature in small and large oak barrels as well as terracotta. The 2022 Chianti Colli Fiorentini Sorrettole is one of the estate’s flagship wines. It is a blend dominated by Sangiovese, complemented by smaller quantities of Canaiolo, Merlot, and Colorino. After vinification and ageing in steel, it offers a fresh, deep taste with a savoury and dynamic progression, accompanied by an intense aromatic bouquet reminiscent of plum, black cherry, and sour cherry, with hints of undergrowth, liquorice, and balsamic notes.
According to the Berebene 2025 guide by Gambero Rosso, it is the best value-for-money wine in Tuscany.
