2017 is Amazon’s food tech year
Innovation, food tech and food enterprise are now a given for Amazon, with a plethora of new projects launching in 2017. Italy will soon benefit from the Amazon Marketplace, a service that is well-established in the U.S., or the new e-commerce meets shopping service AmazonFresh Pickup, where consumers can pick up their shopping in kiosks 15 minutes after their online order. Lastly, one of the biggest projects due to reconfigure the entire enterprise, was the purchase of Whole Foods. These bold choices allow a glimpse into the company’s overall entrepreneurial vision.
Fresh products
Projects are in constant evolution. It appears that Jeff Bezos intends to approach the fresh product path, starting with the delivery of a new line of specialties with a long shelf life and no need for refrigeration. How? Thanks to MATS (Microwave Assisted Thermal Sterilization), an innovative technology that preserves foods thanks to pressurized water. Once microwaved for a few minutes the product presents no bacteria and keeps the flavour of ingredients intact. The technology was developed initially for military supplies, and which was met with such enthusiasm to be implemented into the mainstream food industry.
Goals
Reuters released the news that Amazon has been wishing to extends its range of products, adding ready made dishes such as beef stew and vegetable omelette thanks to MATS technology. The recipes are simple, practical and easy to stock and deliver: dishes can be transported via air, rail or road thanks to their practical and unique conservation technique. No more travelling fridge vans, ice busses and such, the delivery service will soon adopt a different form, implementing and improving Amazon’s already varied offer. The modern delivery alternative allows widening the choice and extend distances without worrying about damage of foods during transportation. Neither Bezos or other Amazon executives have confirmed any of this, but we’re sure the Amazon giant will surely raise the level of its offer.
