Despite a challenging 2023 vintage for Abruzzo, largely due to downy mildew (with some areas losing up to 80% of the crop), there have been significant high points, as evidenced by the wines awarded Tre Bicchieri 2025.
Here, we focus on Cerasuolo, a wine produced through a short maceration of pure Montepulciano grapes. This process tempers the intense character of Montepulciano, resulting in lighter wines that, at their best, retain all the energy of the grape, channelling it in the right direction. Of course, we’re referring to the authentic, most characteristic versions.
This year, we awarded the highest recognition, Tre Bicchieri, to three excellent Cerasuolo labels: the Giusi from Tenuta Terraviva, now with its third accolade; the Fossimatto by Fontefico brothers Emanuele and Nicola Alteri, celebrated for its authenticity and appeal; and a newcomer to the Tre Bicchieri club: Cingilia from Cugnoli (PE), which impressed us with a Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo as unique as it is delicious.
On the subject of identity, it's worth noting that it’s unnecessary—and probably counterproductive—to dilute Cerasuolo’s colour. A true Cerasuolo should have the colour of “cherry red.” For those pale, onion-skin Provençal-style rosés, there are other designations, and not every winery needs to produce everything simply to complete the range or satisfy market trends. Too often, we encounter Cerasuolo wines that smell like sweet shops; perhaps letting the Montepulciano express itself more freely, at least in this style, would be more appealing.
The best Tre Bicchieri and Due Bicchieri Rossi Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo wines
Here are the top 10 Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo wines that achieved the highest awards or reached the finals with either Tre Bicchieri or Due Bicchieri Rossi in the Vini d'Italia 2025 guide by Gambero Rosso.
Cingilia has received its first Tre Bicchieri with the 2023 Cerasuolo, almost a textbook example of how to enhance the varietal character of Montepulciano vinified in a rosé style, though it becomes more like a light red, as tradition dictates. With a hint of graphite over fresh cherry notes, the taste is vibrant, mineral, and lively while still remaining highly drinkable. The young winery is led by Fabio Di Donato, who started winemaking about a decade ago after studying enology. His six-hectare vineyard is located near Cugnoli, in the Pescara Hills. The winery emphasises artisanal techniques and spontaneous fermentations, resulting in a small but characterful range with strong territorial identity.
The Giusi by Tenuta Terraviva takes home another Tre Bicchieri. The 2023 version stays true to the Cerasuolo style we know: flint notes, a slight toasted hint, subtle herbal sensations, and flavours of raspberry, red currant, and crisp cherry.
These aromas set the stage for a fresh and smooth sip, with a vibrant acidity and minerality. Tenuta Terraviva, managed by Pina and Pietro Topi since 2006, has shifted to organic agriculture. Thanks to Pina and Pietro’s daughter Federica, the winery has become one of the most dynamic on the Teramo Hills, producing wines with a distinctly artisanal touch.
The Fossimatto '23 by Fontefico is a strikingly authentic Cerasuolo, where the varietal's character shines through with cherry-like fruitiness and a faint smokiness. The taste is lively, juicy, savoury, and deep. Fontefico, run by brothers Emanuele and Nicola Alteri, has become a solid presence in the region. Located at Punta Penna, Fontefico's 15 hectares of organic vineyards are divided into parcels dedicated to local varieties, including Montepulciano.
Tiberio’s Cerasuolo is true to its roots, showcasing great vitality and a complex, food-friendly palate. Riccardo Tiberio founded the winery in 2000, which is now run by his children, Cristiana and Antonio. Only native grape varieties are grown on the vineyards near Cugnoli, between Gran Sasso and Majella at 350 meters above sea level. Stainless steel is used in the cellar to highlight the natural flavours of Montepulciano, Pecorino, and Trebbiano.
