Not many Lucanian wineries can boast a history as long and rich in successes as that of Paternoster. The winery, a symbol of the wine renaissance in Basilicata, is now part of the Tommasi group, which has chosen to carry forward the vision of Anselmo Paternoster, the company’s founder, back in 1925. It’s far more than a simple partnership between two great families of Italian wine that led the Veneto-based group to invest in the Vulture area, expanding its constellation of wineries with one of Basilicata’s historic brands.
This is the meeting of two philosophies deeply dedicated to excellence, developing in continuity thanks to the close collaboration between Giancarlo Tommasi, oenological director and representative of the Veneto family, and Fabio Mecca, oenologist and fourth generation of the Paternoster family, great-grandson of Anselmo, raised among the family-owned vineyards. The grapes, almost exclusively Aglianico, come from about twenty hectares of estate-owned vineyards (supplemented by trusted growers), spread across several of the best districts of Barile, situated on volcanic soils at altitudes exceeding 600 metres.
The best quality-price ratio wine in Basilicata according to the Berebene 2025 Guide
Paternoster has always produced wines that are rather rich and intense. However, with the Aglianico del Vulture Synthesi '20, we are faced with a wine different from what the brand had accustomed us to so far, marking, in our opinion, a turning point in the stylistic evolution of this historic maison.
This is a red wine appreciated for its clarity, typicity, and stylistic precision. It is creamy in its fruit profile, elegant and subtle, with well-integrated wood notes, complemented by well-matured tannins that form a harmonious and delightful overall picture.
In the Berebene 2025 guide by Gambero Rosso, we awarded it the title for the best quality-price ratio wine in Basilicata. Additionally, it also received the Due Bicchieri Rossi (Two Red Glasses) recognition in the Vini d’Italia 2025 guide by Gambero Rosso, having reached the finals.
