Tuscany reaffirms itself this year as the most awarded region in the guide, with a total of 89 Tre Bicchieri. The number of finalist wines, the two red glasses, is an impressive 327. Due to the vastness of its territory and denominations, the variety of styles and terroirs, these results are thoroughly justified. There is a dynamism, a desire to grow and deepen the connection with the land that knows no pause.
The Best Morellino di Scansano Tre Bicchieri and Due Bicchieri Rossi
Here, we focus on Morellino di Scansano, a full-bodied red wine, rich in fruit, with excellent potential – where the Sangiovese grape plays a leading role. It presents an approachable image that resonates with the general public but also manages to touch on memorable wines from the best vineyards. It is produced in a vast area of the province of Grosseto, including the municipalities of Scansano, Manciano, and the entire hilly area overlooking the courses of the Albegna and Ombrone rivers. It should be served at 18°C and paired with flavorful pasta dishes, game, wild meats, and roasted or grilled red meats.
For Morellino di Scansano, we awarded two labels with Tre Bicchieri and eight labels with Due Bicchieri Rossi in the Gambero Rosso Vini d'Italia 2024 guide.
Once again, the Morellino di Scansano Madrechiesa Riserva by Terenzi, 2020 version, stands out. The aromas have a dark tone reminiscent of ripe cherry, with hints of underbrush, spices, and smoky notes. In the mouth, the rhythm of the sip is lively and well-paced, closing with a long and intense finish. The Morellino di Scansano Purosangue Riserva 2020 shows increased finesse overall. The Milanese Terenzi family arrived in Maremma at the beginning of the new millennium, creating a winemaking project that, to some extent, has injected energy into the Morellino di Scansano denomination. Today, the winery located in Montedonico has established a model characterized by choices both in the cellar and the vineyard, crafting wines with a balanced style tied to their territory, reflecting a blend of tradition and modernity. With a range of consistently high-quality labels, capable of expressing absolute excellence.
The Morellino di Scansano Vigna Liuzza Riserva by Roccapesta interprets the most coherent soul of Maremman Sangiovese. The 2021 version features scents of violet and ripe cherry, with hints of flint. In the mouth, the tannin is dense and lively, the acidity vibrant, and the sip flows savory, with rhythm and fragrance. The rest of the range also yields flattering results, with peaks like the Morellino di Scansano Calestaia Riserva 2020 and the Riserva 2020. Roccapesta's journey has reached its 30th year just this year. It was in 2003 when Alberto Tanzini, a Milanese manager, decided to change his life and dedicate himself to viticulture. Today, this reality is a reference point in the region, thanks to production choices rooted in tradition. The use of the oldest vineyards, such as those of the Calestaia vineyard, large wood barrels, and prolonged bottle aging, result in refined wines with a beautiful personality, longevity, and, until a few years ago, something unimaginable in Scansano.

The Morellino di Scansano A' Luciano 2022 by Santa Lucia is a well-defined wine, starting from its fruity and balsamic olfactory profile. In the mouth, the sip is no less: fine and fragrant, lively and easy to drink. The Scotto family's company was established in 1980 and is now a solid reality in the wine scene of Maremma.
The Morellino di Scansano Laire Ris. 2020 by Bruni is refined and fragrant in the sip, with aromas of aromatic herbs. The company is located near Fonteblanda and consistently represents one of the best expressions of Maremma wine. Led by brothers Marco and Moreno, it boasts a recently renovated cellar focusing on technology, with additional acquisitions of vineyards, where rigorous practices move towards organic certification. The house's style offers impeccably crafted labels with a modern breath, capable of showcasing the generous temperament of wines produced in this corner of Tuscany.
The sip of the Morellino di Scansano Riserva 2020 by Fattoria Le Pupille is articulated and satisfying, highlighting a lush and fragrant fruity nose, spices, and smoky notes. The first Morellino from the estate dates back to 1982. The first Saffredi, a wine that paved the way for the redemption of an entire territory, is from 1987. These are the fundamental dates that determined the subsequent successes of Elisabetta Geppetti, who outlined the key features of an underestimated and yet-to-come Maremma wine region. For about a decade, her children (Clara in export, Ettore between vineyards and cellar) have been managing the estate together, located just outside Grosseto, on the banks of the Ombrone River, now a well-established reference point for local oenology and beyond.
The Morellino Roggiano Riserva 2020 by Vignaioli del Morellino di Scansano features clear and well-defined scents alternating between red fruits, floral hints, and spicy memories. In the mouth, the wine is juicy and smooth, possessing depth and length. The Cantina Vignaioli di Scansano, a cooperative established in 1972, is located not far from the homonymous village and represents, in terms of numbers, the largest reality in the Maremma denomination. The portfolio includes a variety of labels (including Doc Maremma, Pitigliano, and Igt, local grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, and Vermentino, as well as international varieties, whites, reds, and sparkling wines), with overall quality now settled at a good and consistent level, offering increasingly convincing products capable of bridging the gap between ancient and modern, with a coherent and defined stylistic expression.
The Morellino di Scansano Spiaggiole Poggio Maestrino 2021 by Rocca di Castagnoli is one of the best wines from the estate located in the center of the Additional Geographical Unit of Gaiole in Chianti, owned by the Calì family since 1981. Today, the brothers Alessandro and Francesco lead the winery, imprinting a comforting line of continuity on the results of the estate's wines, now consolidated at levels of absolute excellence, characterized by impeccable execution and a strong connection with their original territory. The Calì family also owns the Sicilian estate Graffetta and the vineyards in Maremma at Poggio Maestrino.
