When Vincenzo Ippolito established his winery in Cirò in 1845, the Bourbons still ruled Calabria—Italy would not be born for another 16 years. Today, the small venture that Vincenzo took great pride in has not only endured for nearly two centuries but has also grown into one of Calabria’s largest and most dynamic wineries: Ippolito 1845.
Currently, the winery is managed by Vincenzo, Gianluca, and Paolo Ippolito, who have successfully embraced generational change while implementing an ambitious investment plan that has revolutionised the company’s image.
The winery’s facilities have been modernised, the packaging completely renewed, but above all, significant work has been done in both the vineyard and the cellar.
- In the vineyard, careful pruning and yield control ensure that the grapes reach optimal ripeness and health.
- In the cellar, the focus is on producing clean, elegant wines that authentically express their terroir.
The winery owns three estates covering a total of 100 hectares:
- The estates in Mancuso and Cirò, located in the hills, are ideal for red grape varieties such as Gaglioppo and Calabrese.
- The estates in Feudo and Difesa Piana, near Cirò Marina, are in flat, coastal areas particularly suited for white grape varieties like Greco and Pecorello.
Cirò Rosso Cl. Sup. Colli del Mancuso Ris. 2021 - Ippolito 1845
The best value-for-money wine in Calabria according to the Berebene 2025 Guide
In recent years, the wines of Ippolito 1845 have become increasingly precise, clean, and true to both their territory and grape varieties.
Among this year’s tasting selections, one wine stood out:
- Cirò Rosso Colli del Mancuso '21—a pure Gaglioppo Riserva aged for 12 months in oak barrels.
- It boasts an elegant and persistent aromatic profile, blending red and black berries, violets, laurel, autumn forest floor, and spices.
- Structured and austere on the palate, it perfectly balances fruit with its refined tannic texture.
This wine was awarded Best Value-for-Money Wine in Calabria in the Berebene 2025 guide by Gambero Rosso.
Additionally, it earned the prestigious Due Bicchieri Rossi in the Vini d’Italia 2025 guide, having reached the finals during the tasting sessions.
