The strength of Cantina Settecani lies in its range of "modern wines, fresh and characterful yet clean, which can be easily paired with traditional dishes as well as contemporary ethnic and fusion cuisines, appealing to many young people and wine novices." This philosophy, as described by Daniela Vaschieri, the company’s vice president, is perfectly embodied by the Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro 7Bio, which won the award for Best Value for Money. Beyond its accessible price, the award highlights the wine's pleasant nature, resulting from scrupulous production practices that deliver a convivial and high-quality product. This wine carries a clear message: exceptional enjoyment is achievable through careful production, even at an affordable price.
Settecani: strength in unity
Strength lies in unity, especially when working toward a common goal. Cantina Settecani was founded in 1923 in the hamlet of the same name in Castelvetro di Modena. "Here, a group of 48 winegrowers came together to establish one of the historic wine cooperatives in Modena province," says Daniela Vaschieri. The vineyards are situated in foothill and hillside areas, with altitudes exceeding 400 metres above sea level. "The plots have varying exposures and soils, with a range of pedoclimatic conditions that differ even within a few kilometres, allowing for diverse interpretations of Lambrusco Grasparossa."
A Century of history and a commitment to quality
Today, the number of members has more than doubled. "101 years later, our winery brings together around 130 member growers—a true 'family of families,' as we like to call ourselves—who cultivate 260 hectares of vineyards and harvest around 50,000 quintals of grapes annually." These impressive figures translate into a production that showcases various native grape varieties. "Chief among them is Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro, followed by Pignoletto, and, though now less common, Trebbiano Modenese," Vaschieri explains.
This century-long journey has carved an important path. "Starting in the vineyard," says the vice president, "this journey has led our member growers to adopt sustainable viticulture practices and focus on reducing yields per hectare. This approach has enhanced the value of Lambrusco Grasparossa, enabling us to achieve a level of quality that sets us apart."
A paradigmatic Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro
The Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro 7Bio ’23 is a paradigmatic wine, showcasing the generous red fruit character present both on the nose and palate. Muscular yet fragrant, this wine highlights the varietal aromatic qualities of the grape. The taste is incredibly enjoyable, smooth, and dynamic, with well-polished tannins and a fresh, lively palate that invites sip after sip. The persistent finish, with its fruity tones, enhances its drinkability.
