The training of sommeliers in the United Kingdom also involves Italian wine. The Zonin1821 Group has announced a partnership with the UK Sommelier Association—a synergy established to educate new generations of wine experts. This profession is in high demand in the country, but currently faces a very limited supply, largely due to reasons stemming from the post-Brexit scenario.
Few Sommeliers in the United Kingdom
Established in 2005, the UK Sommelier Association, based in London, has trained over 1000 professionals through courses built on the foundations and principles of the Italian Sommelier Association. Presently, it is estimated that there are approximately 500-600 vacant positions for this role in the United Kingdom. "After Britain's exit from the European Union, people returned to their homes in Europe, found work there, and did not come back. If they stayed here, enough time has passed that they are now restaurant managers or directors and no longer work as sommeliers. We have no one coming in at a junior level," stated Federica Zanghirella, Vice President of the UK Sommelier Association, to The Times.
The Role of Zonin 1821 Group
One key aspect of this collaboration is the commitment of the Zonin1821 Group to provide resources, support, and privileged access to its vineyards and cellars to enrich the educational program of the UK Sommelier Association. This synergy will allow association members to deepen their knowledge of Zonin wines, comprehending their history, production, and distinctive characteristics. The company not only encourages a greater number of young individuals to enter the industry but also provides many labels from its portfolio, including those from Ca' Bolani, Castello Di Albola, Rocca Di Montemassi, Oltrenero, Principi di Butera, and Masseria Altemura.
The offer will not be limited solely to the Italian territory but will also draw from the New World, featuring selections such as Barboursville (Virginia) and Dos Almas (Colchagua and Casablanca). Additionally, students will have the opportunity to taste wines distributed in the United Kingdom, such as Barolo Damilano and the South African DuToitskloof. "We are thrilled to provide wines from our exceptional Italian and international portfolio to help prepare the next generation of high-level sommeliers in collaboration with the UKSA," stated Simon Thomas, General Manager of Zonin1821 for the UK, to Drinks Business. "Supporting the training and experience in serving fine wines perfectly aligns with the values of Zonin1821."
Supporting these statements are those of Vice President Federica Zanghirella of the UK Sommelier Association. "With our deep appreciation for the exceptional quality of their wines, we look forward to embarking on the journey to introduce a selection of their extraordinary range to our students—the future connoisseurs of fine wines and sommeliers."
