Tre Bicchieri 2019 Previews. Tuscany's best wines

In this edition of Italian Wines, Tuscany is the uncontested champion, with the region receiving a whopping 84 Tre Bicchieri, a record. Of course it was helped along by a few excellent years, like 2013 in Montalcino and 2015, which was a great year everywhere. But we also can’t help but point out that the region’s success in Italy and on global markets is well-deserved. In no other region (with the exception of Piedmont, possibly) do producers so consistently reinvest their profits in their vineyards, cellars and professional resources. Tuscany is a battleground in which the country’s top enological talent competes, but it’s also more than that. The magic hills of Chianti Classico, Montalcino, Bolgheri and Maremma are an irresistible magnet for those who believe themselves capable of making great wine. During our tastings we evaluated almost 350 of them, and we can assure our readers that there’s not a lot of difference between the Tre Bicchieri awarded and the 250 offerings that received Due Bicchieri. Having said that, let’s turn to Chianti Classico with its 22 gold medals (plus 6 supertuscans from the area), a feat that affirms the area’s status as the region’s beating heart, along with Montalcino, which saw 14 Brunellos and 2 Rosso di Montalcinos take home our highest honors (its best result ever). But all of Tuscany’s prized districts delivered: Bolgheri with 6, Carmignano with 3, Rufina with 2, San Gimignano with 3, not to mention the rest of the region, from Maremma to Montecucco, Morellino, Scansano, Vino Nobile, Cortona and Parrina, and a hearty presence of IGT designated offerings. This year the entire region gave us wines of excellent quality, progressively more focused on expressing terroir by way of traditional grapes (a real challenge today, considering changes in climate). And as is custom we mention those wineries that received Tre Bicchieri for the first time (11 in all, representing 13% of the total, thus confirming the region’s enological vitality): Fattoria Ambra, Tenuta di Arceno-Arcanum, Camigliano, Tenuta Carleone, Castellinuzza, Cinciano, Lunadoro, Tenuta Monteti, Tenuta La Parrina, Podere la Regola, and Veroni. We close by highlighting an extremely important achievement, this edition’s Red of the Year award. It’s Tenuta di Sesta’s 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Duelecci Ovest Riserva, a wine of great finesse, depth and poignant elegance.
