To start with an overused “Campania, lights and shadows” to describe the situation we have found in the Campania region this year would be really ungenerous. Because it is true that we have found some flaws, it is equally true that the lights shine very bright indeed.
Among the territories increasingly in the limelight, the Campi Flegrei are a bet that has already been won. And it is precisely two excellent expressions of Piedirosso from the Campi Flegrei that we present here and that we have awarded with Tre Bicchieri in the Gambero Rosso Guida Vini d'Italia 2024 guide.
This year we had a jolt when we tasted the Piedirosso by Giuseppe Fortunato (Contrada Salandra), one of the most enlightened winemakers in Italy. Already from the aromatic profile we realised that we were dealing with a wine of great character: fresh with floral sensations, multifaceted thanks to the spicy notes, it turns on blueberry and blackberry before a true, salty, crisp palate, precise in its tannic extraction.
Colle Rotondella (Cantine Astroni) is the red we would always like to drink. It is a Piedirosso that succeeds in the difficult task of combining extreme drinkability, a multifaceted profile and identity of grape variety and terroir. It does this by interweaving on the nose sensations of fresh red and black fruits, a vaguely smoky memory, and a very clear floral and spicy trace. The palate shines for its smoothness, acid-flavoured support and intensity of flavour.
