Tre Bicchieri 2024, the two Timorasso wines awarded by Gambero Rosso

Timorasso is one of those wines that could be described as a “red dressed as white”, an overabused expression used to describe white wines with a particular and abundant structure.

The area where the vine is cultivated in Piemonte borders Lombardy, Emilia and Liguria: the Colli Tortonesi. Timorasso, which was on the verge of disappearing in the late 1980s, was rediscovered in the early 1990s by Walter Massa. And so the district started working again with this powerful yet elegant grape, which gives wines quality that is immediately percievable, but that can also evolve very well over time. Now to the tastings, where the 2021 vintage and the 2020 Reserves were the main focus.

Tre Bicchieri 2024. The best Timorasso

During tastings for the Vini d'Italia guide, we had some exciting tastings and there was no shortage of surprises. The Timorasso is eclectic, energetic and powerful. Bright and golden in colour, with yellow aromas of flowers and fruit, and hints of citrus, it is thick and savoury on the palate in the most convincing expressions, wide-ranging sips capable of recounting a territory that the producers, some fifty in number, read and practise with very different interpretations in the vineyard and cellar. The greatest hope, perhaps, lies precisely in this last aspect, being able to identify a more direct and clear-cut identity on the palate, while maintaining the facets that the origin of the grapes can tell. This unity of intentions and paths aimed at marking out a “territorial identity” without moles could represent a solid base on which to launch the future of a great appellation that is still somewhat unaware of its richness and uniqueness of expression.
