Tuscany once again establishes itself as the most celebrated region in the guide, with an impressive 88 Tre Bicchieri awarded. The number of finalists, denoted by two red glasses, stands at 327. Given its size, the number of appellations, and the variety of styles and terroirs represented, these results are wholly justified. There's an unwavering dynamism and a desire to grow, deepening the connection to the land.
Tuscany's Tre Bicchieri 2024. Chianti Classico
We start with the most recognized appellation both in Italy and worldwide, Chianti Classico. This year more than ever, the authority of Gran Selezione stands out. Often the product of single vineyards, these are wines with considerable aging potential. The delightful Chianti Classico annata versions, which only we award in such significant numbers, also impressed, as did the Riserva category. Crucially, we're seeing a shift away from the overpowering presence of certain soulless and characterless Supertuscans. In Montalcino, we noted the fresh and supple 2018, and the hot, dry 2017 for the Riserva. This brought the region’s best interpreters to the forefront once again. Montepulciano, in its own right, delivers wines with an increasingly strong and independent personality compared to its illustrious neighbors. Its journey towards this distinction is marked by milestones such as the Pievi, a wine as crucial as Rufina's Terraelectae and Chianti Classico's UGA.
Tuscany's Tre Bicchieri 2024. Montalcino, Montepulciano, Bolgheri, Cortona, Maremma
Bolgheri remains an irresistible attraction for both Italian and foreign entrepreneurs, reaffirming itself as an ideal territory for international varietals like cabernet sauvignon and merlot, though with a distinctly Mediterranean character. The same can be said for Cortona, now firmly on the map for syrah enthusiasts, both local and abroad. Maremma's whites are witnessing the unstoppable rise of vermentino, with the coming years set to confirm the wisdom of this trend. On the red wine front, Morellino di Scansano stands out. It’s a red that presents an approachable image to the wider public, but in the case of the best vineyards, also includes some memorable versions.
Tuscany's Tre Bicchieri 2024. Internationl grape varieties
But the entire Tuscan Coast is a veritable open-air workshop, producing wines from international grapes, where cabernet franc seems to be a step ahead. However, upon closer inspection, every corner of the region offers something new and captivating, as evidenced by the “nouvelle vague” of the Apennine Pinot Nero. Meanwhile, we welcome De’ Ricci in Montepulciano, Dianella in Vinci, and Tenuta Ceri in Carmignano to the exclusive Tre Bicchieri club. This last is also our Up-and-Coming Winery of the Year.
