A family history spanning almost 50 years at the service of territory and of a passion. Beni di Batasiolo tells about Piemonte and its wines through a constant search for quality and the interpretation of the vintages.

Batasiolo, a family history

The Batasiolo winery is an authoritative voice that tells the story of the Piemonte area and its wines. Over 140 hectares of owned property, 9 farm houses scattered in the heart of the Langhe between Monforte, La Morra and Serralunga which enclose several vineyards and a resort - Il Boscareto - which will reopen at the end of March after a total renovation. A company of considerable size, but which has never lost sight of the objective and the approach on which it drew its foundation.

History of the winery

"The company was founded in 1978 thanks to the Dogliani family who bought the historic Kiola winery in the most prestigious Nebbiolo da Barolo wine making areas. The Dogliani have always been in the world of wine and with them began the work of modernising the vineyards, mass selections of Nebbiolo, and restructuring the cellar, in order to have full control of the supply chain". Gabriele Pezzuto, export manager of the company, tells us "The 'family' factor is very important, because it makes wine a generational conversation. Here you have the pulse of your territory and try to better interpret the vintages, tackling all those variables ranging from problems such as global warming and drought, to the characteristics of the individual vineyard in micro-vinifications." A pure approach, in which tradition is grafted and accompanies the use of the most modern technology to achieve control over the production chain.

Wines and grape varieties

"Batasiolo is neither traditionalist nor modernist," continues Gabriele Pezzuto. "We try to bring wine and territory into the glass in the purest way possible. We use technology so as not to spoil, but rather to enhance each wine." Among the spearheads, in the company's production, no less than five Barolo crus, but there is no shortage of native grapes and great wines made from Barbera grapes. "Briccolina, Boscareto (from which the resort takes its name), Cerequio, one of the most important crus of the Langhe, and Bussia. Then there is the Barbera d'Alba Sovrana, thanks to which we are proud recipients of this year's Tre Bicchieri. Barbera is almost as if it were a Barolo, as it has a great ageing propensity, it comes from the Barolo area, and we have achieved a quality that has been recognised by Gambero Rosso."

The role of territory for Batasiolo

Telling about Piemonte is one of the main objectives of the company, exporting it and making it known on the international wine scene. And like any large winery, there is a continuous renewal of the company range with new labels and the search for wines that can meet the tastes of today's market. "One of Fiorenzo's great teachings is this: maintaining solid relationships with customers by truthfully narrating Barolo and our territory, in order to make it known and to perceive the value, work and quality of a company like ours" comments Pezzuto. "Last year we released Micò, following the wave of rosés without wanting to mimic the fine Puglia wines or Provençal rosés. We experimented and found great potential in Nebbiolo and Barbera for producing Langhe rosés. In more recent times we have been carrying out a project for making Nebbiolo sparkling wine, but which will see a label only in the future."
