Alto Adige: among small winemakers, cooperative wineries and historic families

Alto Adige is one of the most varied wine-growing regions in Italy, just under 6,000 hectares of vineyards that lie on an area where altitude, exposure, positioning and soil change continuously, offering combinations that allow many vines to find the own territory of choice, cultivated by a small army of winegrowers who on average own just over one hectare. Central to the work of the numerous cooperatives, they are large companies for the region but that generally can't manage beyond 300 hectares of vineyards, and that with great skill give value to the work of the numerous members, turning the grapes into wines of excellence. Alongside them, the historical families of Alto Adige wines, able over the centuries to extend their properties to many of the most coveted plots, as well as the small family-run companies that with the same care tend to the small patches of land scattered throughout the province.

Vini d'Italia 2023: the best wines in Alto Adige

Thanks to the sequence of excellent harvests that has characterised the last few years, the results are great again this year, with award-winning wines for all the main cultivated vines, from the traditional schiava of Santa Maddalena and Caldaro to riesling, veltliner and kerner of the Venosta and Isarco valleys. The large areas of Oltradige and Bassa Atesina are the protagonists of this year's successes, with many wines produced in this area that have achieved the highest results, such as the Bordeaux of Castel Sallegg and Kurtatsch; the Müller Thurgau of the Tiefenbrunner in Favogna; Tramin's Chardonnay Troy or the grapes harvested for the Appius by San Michele Appiano. Going up the Adige river, the Sauvignons of Terlano conquer centre stage with the valuable performances of Quarz by the Terlano winery and Lieben Aich from Manincor, echoed by the deep and mighty Lagrein of the city basin. In the Burgraviato the star of the Chardonnay Goldegg from the Merano cooperative shines while in the opposite direction, going up the Isarco river, it is Markus Prackwieser and Florian Unterthiner who hold high the flag of this borderland where the climate alternates with heat typical of the capital with the fresh currents that descend from the Alps, while still advancing northwards and reaching the northern limit of Italian viticulture, the wines of the Cantina Valle Isarco and those of Günther Kerschbaumer shine with their own light.
