Wines of the Valle d'Aosta: a small production, but a big success

The beautiful words that will follow giving a detailed account of the success of the Aosta Valley wines, begin with a sore point for the producers, who every year strive to find balance between maximum quality and high quantity. The year 2022 witnessed a reduction in the production by about one quarter. In fact, the climatic problems, which afflicted Italy during the 2022 season, did not spare Valle d'Aosta. In recent years, regional production has stood at around 2 million bottles per year, while for the last harvest it will most likely be around one and a half million pieces. This will bring small disadvantages to the vignerons of the valley but will allow them to maintain their prices if not even to slightly adjust them upwards. If there will be increases, in addition to a possible lack of product, these can be attributed to a factor that should fill local winemakers with pride: the first valid signs of international interest in Valle d'Aosta wines. As already written in the past, wineries in the Valley have never had major problems selling their entire production, given the amount of restaurants and wine bars in the area and the flow of tourists that has returned more regular after the period devastated by Covid.

The success of Aosta Valley wines: analysis of steady growth

The enormous step forward made by the wines of the valley should not be underestimated. A more articulated foreign request and not referring only to highly renowned labels increases the prestige of the entire regional wine sector. A common growth under the aegis of the newborn Consortium of Wines of Valle d'Aosta would bring generalised well-being. This growing desire for Valle d'Aosta wines certainly confirms that the combination of the great terroirs of the region (microclimate, altitude, exposure, position and human work) with the most suitable grape varieties represents the richness of the region's oenology. From these magical combinations and the peculiarities of the Valle d'Aosta vineyards also arise our fantastic award-winning wines which could have been much more numerous if we had not decided to raise the bar a little. Petite arvine, white muscat, chardonnay, pinot noir and syrah planted in the right places and tended to with love, first in the vineyard and then in the cellar, make the wines of the Valle d'Aosta truly great.
