Rare Wines: two whites that age better than reds

The two whites in this episode of Vini Rari - Rare Wines are produced respectively in just 1,782 and 1,500 bottles. They have character to spare and can age gracefully for well over 10 years. Campania calls, Friuli-Venezia Giulia answers.

In the editorial office, we are strongly convinced that Italian whites often age better than reds. It is a message that we carry around the world during our events, strengthened by the tastings that we repeat on a daily basis. In our journey with Rare Wines we have chosen two world-class white terroirs: Campania and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. In the first case we are in one of the most suitable sub-areas of Irpinia, in the municipality of Montefusco, learning about a parcel that brings something special into the glass. Greco di Tufo Arielle 2015 from the Feudo Studi line of Feudi di San Gregorio is an enchanting, refined, harmonious, complete white: a cru produced in just 1,500 bottles. It is the result of a commendable study, Feudo Studi, commissioned by Antonio Capaldo, who invested to map out and study in depth all the sub-areas of Irpinia: the plots of the group are 800, as many as 180 of Greco grapes.

We are convinced that this is a research that will be well taken up and put to good use by the Consorzio Tutela Vini d'Irpinia and by many other producers in the area, because the scope of the work is truly precious. The second rare wine instead takes us to Friuli-Venezia Giulia, in the province of Udine, between two old vineyards of Istrian Malvasia and Sauvignon. Morus Alba 2020 by Vignai da Duline is a wine that offers many levels of interpretation, maceration is just a starting point to give definition to a complex, graceful liquid with great freshness and a long finish.

VINEYARD | Located in Irpinia, in the municipality of Montefusco, between the Sabato and Calore rivers, between 500 and 600 metres above sea level. The name Ariella is the toponym of the place, the grapes come from three north-west facing plots. From here come some of the more 'Nordic' wines of Campania, fine in aromas and with a remarkable vertical length, product of mountain climate and soils of extraordinary calcareous matrix. Here the Greco di Tufo expresses itself in its maximum beauty. PERSONS | The Feudo Studi project was born in 2012. Antonio Capaldo, CEO of the Group, wanted an in-depth zoning work and mapping of the vineyards of Greco, Fiano and Taurasi. The consultancy was handled by Paolo De...

Friuli Morus Alba 2020

VINEYARD | Morus Alba celebrates the union of two grapes (Istrian Malvasia and the historic Friulian Sauvignon) with two vineyards. The first variety, used for 60%, comes from the Da Duline vineyards, a toponym that identifies the oldest plots of the estate, which date back to the early twentieth century. We are talking about four hectares in all left to Lorenzo Mocchiutti, the current owner, by his great-grandfather. The Sauvignon, on the other hand, comes from Ronco Pitotti, a unique and exciting place where vineyards, woodlands and meadows in bloom chase each other. A true example of biodiversity. Here Lorenzo rents a vineyard of about two hectares divided into small parcels where he produces single-varietals and the historic Friulian sauvignon...
