The name Guido Formilli Fendi would typically whisk one away to the world of fashion (he's the CEO of Cofedo and son of fashion designer Franca Fendi and Luigi Formilli, to whom the "Fendente" is dedicated). Instead, it brings us to the heart of Maremma wine country, between Capalbio, Montemerano, and Manciano. Here, in 2018, Guido established an estate under his name, producing wines that are already proving well crafted. The whites are fragrant and drinkable, while the reds are well-balanced and flavorful, thanks in part to the careful use of mostly small oak barrels. The Maremma Sangiovese Fendente '18 exhibits aromas of red fruit and spices with touches of Mediterranean scrub and earthy, balsamic hints. On the palate, it's supple and smooth, featuring a multifaceted development and a sapid, well-focused finish. The Maremma Vermentino Chicca '22 offers up linden flowers, hints of anise, and touches of ripe white fruits before a progression of flavors that's supple and fresh, with a tasty and well-sustained palate.
