Pantaleone

Description

Nazzareno Pantaloni's hunch that a small valley not far from the center of Ascoli Piceno would be a good place to plant his vineyard paid off immensely. Despite its proximity to the city, the site benefits from cool soils, significant day-night temperature swings (owing to the nearby Mount Ascensione) and an unspoiled surrounding landscape. Cellarmaster Giuseppe Infriccioli has skillfully honed a style that leverages these qualities, resulting in taut whites whose profiles aptly reflect this mountain terrain, and never-too-ripe reds that stand out increasingly for their drinkability. Three high-level wines were presented. The La Ribaltà '19 (grenache) sees faintly evolved traits amidst sensations of dry leaves, leather, hints of aromatic herbs, and small red fruits, sensations that lend complexity to a warm, deep palate. The Onirocep '22 is the usual whirlwind of citrus, irresistibly drinkable. The Sipario '19 surprises. A seductive Montepulciano, it brings together brackish notes, morello cherries and burnt embers, with an authentic palate and a highly characterful finish.
