VINEYARD | The "Pulenaria" area extends for about 30 hectares south of the town of Mamoiada and takes its name from the plateau located upstream of state road no. 389 which connects Mamoiada to Fonni. It is here that Luca Gungui decided to plant a small vineyard trained in alberello, exclusively with Cannonau grapes. The plot is just 0.8 hectares, a single parcel, characterised by a steep slope and south-west exposure, at an altitude of 730, 750 metres. The soil, on granite bedrock, very draining, is mostly of medium texture with high percentages of irregular sand distributed especially in the lower part. The area consists of a partially wooded hill: in particular, there are cork oak forests alternating with clearings without vegetation. The landscape, especially on the opposite side, is characterised by the presence of vineyards, some of which are very old, and woods, with numerous interruptions given by the land intended for grazing.
PERSON | The call to the roots, the return to his country of origin, the desire to devote himself to the countryside. Luca Gungui really made the decision of a lifetime when he chose to return to Mamoiada and become a winemaker, giving continuity to the family tradition, but also to the tradition of the entire community. The few labels produced are all obtained from Cannonau which here in Mamoiada finds its great vocation and changes according to the vineyard so much that Luca fought to be able to put the toponym of the vineyard on the label, as demonstrated by the Rare Wine presented. "Planting up in that area was more than a bet," he says. "In 2018, the year of planting, the abundant rain storms hammered us three times with numerous streams down to the valley floor, but the vines resisted and so did I." Determined, with clear ideas, Luca wants to bring the true essence of Mamoiada into the glass, through meticulous work in the vineyard and simple, artisanal process in the cellar, but implemented with awareness and preparation.
WINE | In the lower part of the vineyards there was a large granite quarry called "Sa cava de Pulenaria": hence the name of a wine obtained solely from cannonau and the result of spontaneous fermentation and maceration of about 15 days. Ageing includes only the use of stainless steel and glass. The result is a red with great fragrance, with notes of small red fruits and rose in the forefront. The mouth immediately shows great energy, an explosion of vitality that comes from an incredible acidic freshness (the altitude is evident), perfectly integrated with an enveloping, silky substance, capable of caressing the mouth and giving a sip that's punctuated by mature, soft, delicate tannins. Finish in grand style with sapidity that peeps out and lengthens the sip, always smooth and very pleasant.
