VINEYARD | Small parcel that is part of the Vigna Le Pievi, trained according to the Guyot system and located 50 metres above sea level. Fabio Motta's love for Sangiovese is well known and Lo Scudiere is a tribute to the renowned red Il Cavaliere produced in Bolgheri by Michele Satta. Understandably, since Fabio has always worked with Sangiovese and finally decided to produce one in purity. The soil is sandy and clayey sedimentary, the exposure is South-West.
PERSON | "Fabio Motta is one of Bolgheri's most interesting young winemakers, capable of a clear and increasingly convincing path." So stated the 2019 Vini d'Italia guide and now, 4 years later, we can say that that path has been even more defined thanks to the new cellar in which Fabio can work freely, giving harmony to the work in the vineyard of great value. His story starts from a degree in agriculture and from the fundamental experience with Michele Satta, whom Fabio considers as his great mentor. Then the purchase of the first vineyards which led him to now have just under 10 hectares of vineyards, both in Pievi (an area dedicated to red grapes) and in Fornacelle where the whites are grown, Vermentino in the lead. Alongside the Bordeaux grapes, Fabio has never hidden his love for Sangiovese.
WINE | Lo Scudiere is the pure Sangiovese of the Motta house, it comes from twenty-year-old vineyards. The grapes are harvested by hand in small crates, 25% are not destemmed, they ferment in 30-hectolitre truncated conical wooden vats. In the glass it is immediately striking. The nose is complex and multifaceted and offers both the most typical notes of the variety (with a very fascinating touch of orange peel) up to more Mediterranean sensations, such as herbs, iodine and maquis touches. The mouth has substance and character, the tannin is not lacking but it gives rhythm and marks the sip, the alcohol is perfectly integrated and gives a nice softness that fades into sapidity and a textbook long finish.
