Scoglio Nero Tenuta Isola del Giglio 2019

Tuscany
white

Description

VINEYARD | Walking among the vines on the island of Giglio, pearl of the Tuscan archipelago, is a real luxury. The rows extend over a very small area, 1.2 hectares, overlooking the sea. The variety cultivated is the ansonica, the great protagonist of the island, which well succeeds in bringing the Mediterranean character of the island into the glass. The soils consist of sands of granite origin dating back 5 million years. The wine ferments in steel and then matures partly in used barriques and partly in stoneware containers. The wine is put on the market three years after the harvest after adequate rest in the bottle.

PERSON | Tenuta Isola del Giglio is the ambitious project of Philippe Austruy, a French entrepreneur who already owns Tenuta Casenuove in Panzano in Chianti. In 2019, with the help of agronomist Alessandro Fonseca, he identified and purchased a small vineyard in the pearl of the Tuscan archipelago, fascinated by the beauty of the island. Here he founded the wine cellar, starting a new oenological adventure. Only one wine is produced: the Scoglio Nero label, a toponym that pays homage to the dark rock formation of the area.

WINE | We rarely comment on the colour, in the glass we are struck by a very intense golden yellow with slight amber reflections. The hints are ripe and enveloping, of yellow peach, medlar, then clear hints of helichrysum and chamomile. The palate is enveloping, delicately tropical in its fruit, revived by tones of thyme and marjoram, then hazelnut and a final saline lashing. The progression is slow, more played on flavour than acidity, for a white to be sipped calmly and carefully.
