VINEYARD | This delight is the product of a single vineyard, from 1933, trained on the pergola system. Located at high altitude, in the upper Ossolana valley, the protagonist is the Ossola biotype of Nebbiolo, the prünent. The soils are acidic and sub-acidic, with a ferrous character; the wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation and then matures for 2 years in a single 30-hectolitre wooden barrel, and then spends a year in the bottle. Located in the province of Domodossola, with vineyards between 300 and, in rare cases, up to 600 metres above sea level.
PERSON | The Garrone family has brought attention back to an area with a very high wine-growing vocation. A century ago in the Ossola Valleys there were 900 hectares of vineyards, today they are reduced to 40. The winery is located in a building that dates back to the 14th century in Oira di Crevoladossola, where the charming B&B is also housed. Today, Matteo's family makes wine from the grapes of 60 winegrowers who work with passion in areas of very old terraced vineyards in which the vine is supported by stone columns. The prevalent grape is Nebbiolo, but there are also strains of Merlot from nearby Switzerland.
WINE | What freshness! From the glass comes a breath of mountain aromas. Balsamic essence, laurel and pepper, with regenerating notes of citrus peel and watermelon. The mouth has a lot of rhythm and flavour, with a length of great class and depth. It is both light and articulated, quick and deep. The tannic texture is a glove. Slightly darker finish, with hints of withered flowers and licorice. Enormous drinkability and great ageing potential.
